What to Expect in San Francisco

San Francisco is a beautiful city home to tech innovators and picturesque backdrops of hills, cable cars, magnificent architecture, and more. It is one of the most populous cities in California and has been constantly noted as one of the best places to live in the state. Let’s dive into some of what makes living in San Francisco unique.

    San Francisco Cost of Living

Let’s address the elephant in the room whenever anyone mentions San Francisco – the cost of living. There is no denying that San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the United States. It ranks as #2 in the most expensive cities only behind New York City. The large concentration of tech companies, CEOs, and other C-Suite employees has certainly increased the cost of living and housing. However, those who are fortunate enough to be able to afford to live there can enjoy many different aspects.

    San Francisco Housing Market

The housing market in San Francisco is incredibly competitive. Even with high price tags, most homes move off the market quickly. The median home price in the city is $1.7 million and the average rent for a three-bedroom apartment is approximately $5,700/month. With so many Silicon Valley employees with inflated salaries, the result is an over-inflated housing market that can be tough to break into right away.

    Unique, Eclectic Neighborhoods

San Francisco is split up into multiple neighborhoods and districts, each of which carries its own unique identity and charm. The five main districts are the Downtown Area, Richmond, Sunset, Upper Market/South Central, and Bernel Heights/South East.

Some of the other well-known neighborhoods include North Beach, Chinatown, Union Square, Central Market, SOMA, Haight-Ashbury, Fillmore, Pacific Heights, Nob Hill, Mission District, Marina District, and Japantown.

    San Francisco Attractions

    The Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge was built in 1933 and stands at a whopping 746 feet tall. It is the tallest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge is 1.7 miles long and walkable for pedestrians. Many people look to surrounding areas to capture beautiful sunrise and sunset photos.

    Alcatraz Island

The famous Alcatraz Island prison is located 1.2 miles offshore from the city and the only way to get there is by chartered boat. This former federal prison operated between 1934 and 1963. It was home to many notorious criminals and has a haunting lore around it. There are daily tours available to explore the island and learn more about the prison’s history.

    Lombard Street

This famous street is perfect for sightseeing and must be experienced at least once. The 27-degree angle crooked street has eight hairpin turns. Millions of visitors walk or drive down its eight sharp turns each year. It is commonly referred to as “the crookedest street in the world.”

    Pier 39

Pier 39 is a famous shopping center right by the marina. Featuring many different popular shops, restaurants, an arcade, and picturesque views of the Bay, there is always something to find. You can even catch a glimpse of some of California’s sea lions here.

    Walt Disney Family Museum

You can’t think of California without mentioning Disney! Fans of the popular theme park can get their fix of all-things-Disney at the museum. You can learn about Walt Disney, the man behind the magic, and his legacy at the Walt Disney Family Museum. There are multiple exhibits, with new ones added frequently, and special family-friendly events for all to enjoy.

    Muir Woods

If you are the outdoorsy type, or just want to experience one of the most beautiful spectacles in nature, you have to check out Muir Woods. This National Park is famous for its large Redwood trees. These trees have an average age of 600 to 800 years old, with some of the oldest being approximately 1,200 years old. See nature in all its glory at Muir Woods, a federally protected National Park.

Popular Food Spots in San Francisco

San Fran has a bustling foodie community with tons of different options available. Being on the water, the city is known for its fresh seafood, but there are plenty of other styles to choose from.

    Fog Harbour Fish House

The Fog Harbour Fish House is one of the top 5 seafood restaurants in the city. It is located on Pier 39 and serves up delicious, high-quality seafood with spectacular views of the ocean.

    City View

For those looking for more international options, Chinatown has plenty to offer. City View is a renowned Chinatown locale serving up delicious dim sum. Their dumplings are considered some of the best in the entire city.

    Schubert’s Bakery

When a culinary establishment has been in business for decades, you know it has to be good! Schubert’s Bakery is a family-owned and operated business since 1911 and serves up fresh bread, desserts, cakes and more. Stop in for your weekly grocery haul or just to get yourself a treat.
