How to Plan a Smooth Move: Part 2

When you’re past the middle of trying to plan a move, there are still many aspects to consider. You need to declutter your home in order to speed up the moving process as much as possible, and you also need to decide which items to sell before moving, and which items to keep. So, as you can see, even though you’re more than halfway there, it can still be a bit complicated.

You’ve done the first step in the process of planning a relocation – you’ve contacted a professional moving company in San Diego. This eases the entire process greatly. But, there are still steps you should take to make the move transpire as smoothly as possible.

How do I plan a move?

Although you’re past the halfway point in the process of preparing to move, there’s still some serious work to be done. You might think you’re over the hump, but that’s not entirely true. Here’s what awaits you two weeks before M-Day.

Now you’re nearing the final stretch. Your nerves might be tingling, and you’re starting to notice you’re becoming a bit anxious. Don’t, as there’s no need for it.

  • Dispose of all the poisonous, corrosive, or flammable items around your home.
  • Prepare the meals for two weeks and throw them in the freezer.
  • Return anything you might have borrowed from family and friends.
  • Perform a backup of your computer.
  • Cancel your current recycling and trash removal services and set them up at your new address.
  • Remove all the light bulbs from the lamps you plan to take with you.
  • If you’re moving far you should think about cleaning out all the safe deposit boxes.
  • Go online and make a list of all the emergency service technicians.
  • If you have pets, make sure you find a safe spot for them during the move.
  • Consult online maps to find optimal routes for you to go to work.
  • Send moving announcements.
  • Start forwarding your mail.
  • Within 10 days of moving, change your Social Security benefit address.
  • Transfer your renters or homeowners insurance.
  • Transfer or cancel your gym membership,
  • Transfer all your utilities, including electric, water, and natural gas.
  • Update the driver’s licence.
  • Change the address for your car registration and auto insurance.
  • Clean any outdoor furniture you might have.
  • If necessary, transfer all your medical prescriptions.

  • Thoroughly clean your home for the resident to come.
  • The night before the move make sure you unplug the freezer and the fridge to defrost.
  • Drain all the water hoses that go into your ice maker and washing machine.
  • Empty all the gas and oil from heaters, grills, snow blowers and lawnmowers.
  • Leave a small gift or a note for the new resident.
  • Make sure you’ve left nothing on shelves and in closet corners.
  • Make an “essential box” that contains all of the most important items you’ll need during the first 24 hours at your new home.
  • Withdraw some cash in order to tip the movers.

T-minus 24 hours

This is it. This is the day you’re moving. Hope you had a good night’s sleep, it’s time to do the final leg of your journey.

  • Protect the carpets and the floors during the move.
  • Tip the movers.
  • Unpack the essentials once the movers leave.
  • Take a walk around the neighborhood and get to know your neighbors.
  • Do some grocery shopping. Make a fresh dinner at your new home.
  • Thank your realtor or your broker.
  • Relax, unwind, watch a movie, play some music, and have some sound sleep at your brand new home.

How early should you book movers?

How early should you book moversYou should book movers at least two months before actually moving. This way you’re making sure you get enough time to get all your affairs in order, to thoroughly plan and prepare the move, and to get everything ready for the actual moving day.

Also, reliable moving companies tend to be booked well in advance, and you want to be able to secure their services on time. You don’t want to have to choose a less dependable moving company just because you were late to the party. Book movers as early as possible to make sure everything transpired as smoothly as it can.
