Packing for a move can be a nightmare. Just deciding on where to start can be intimidating. There’s no surefire way to ensure all your packed belongings will fit neatly in your moving truck, but there are packing strategies that can make your moving process much easier and improve the chances your fragile items arrive in one piece.

If you want to pack like a pro, you need some DIY materials and supplies. Some essential materials include:

  • Boxes with lids or flaps that can be sealed
  • Packing tape and materials (bubble wrap, newspapers, foam peanuts, etc.)
  • Plastic bags
  • Markers and labels

Once you’ve acquired the necessary materials, it’s time to begin the packing process. Packing should be performed on a room-by-room basis. A narrowed focus allows you to group related items together and minimize the number of packing problems you may encounter. Categorize each box by which room they belong to. Once all items in a room have been packed, number the boxes using ratios like box five out of 12, or seven out of 12, to ensure all your boxes are accounted for when you get to your new home.

Don’t bother folding clothing for packing – it’ll take a huge chunk out of your time. Instead move clothes by leaving them on their hangers and place them in wardrobe cartons for transportation instead. You can leave folded clothing in dresser drawers, but prevent them from opening during transit by securing them with stretch wrap.

Although you may feel like keeping dishware separate when packing, you can fill boxes with different types of dishes without worrying about them breaking. Protect dishware by wrapping each item individually in newspaper or bubble wrap just like you’d wrap a birthday or Christmas present. Plates and bowls are easily stackable, so it’s ideal to place these items together in a box to maximize space usage. Make sure to pack dishes on their sides, not on their flat bottoms. Glasses and stemware should also be wrapped individually and placed at the top of the box, but with their rims facing down.

Avoid packing flammable liquids and drain fuel from appliances and tools like lawn mowers, weed eaters and chainsaws before they go in the moving truck. Most moving companies refuse to move flammable items or anything that could potentially injure someone or damage their equipment or your belongings in transit. Cover all sharp edges, tools and cutlery with protective coverings to protect you, your movers and your property.
